Mets vs. Braves, 7:00 pm (SNY, 660 WFAN)

The Atlanta Braves take on the New York Mets in a short two game series. For the Braves, RHP Javier Vazquez (2-2, 3.38) takes the hill as he is opposed by RHP John Maine (1-2, 5.40) who makes his 5th start of the season for the Mets.

The hitter in the Braves lineup that Maine must be careful with, is Chipper Jones, who has a .556 batting average with 1 homerun in 9 at bats against Maine. Look for Luis Castillo to be on base tonight, as he has owns .358 batting average in 67 at bats against Vazquez.

I am glad to see Carlos Delgado back in the lineup after missing the last 4 games with a hip injury. Delgado has said that his hip injury is something that he will have to monitor throughout the season which isn’t a good sign. It is also nice to see Jerry reward Castro with another start after hitting the game tying homerun in Philly on Saturday.

Pregame: Mets vs. Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals host the New York Mets tonight at Busch Stadium. For the Cardinals RHP Todd Wellemeyer squares off against the Mets LHP Oliver Perez. Perez and the Mets hope that he stays as consistent tonight as he was in his last outing when he went six innings giving up only one run on three hits with four strikeouts.

Starting Lineup:

I would have liked to see Manuel switch up the lineup and put Wright in the fifth spot and Beltran in the 3rd spot just to see if they can get their offense rolling.

Citi Field Opens

Tonight the Mets take on the Padres in the first game at Citi Field. After playing 44 years at Shea Stadium, the Mets call Citi Field their new home. RHP Mike Pelfrey gets the honor to be the opening starter for the Mets. RHP Walter Silva starts for the Padres.

There’s a lot of complaints with the fans about the seats being green. Fans who I have spoken to want the seats to resemble the Met colors (orange and blue). The question I have for the fans, is don’t you want new memories for Citi Field? Shea was great but after those last two years it was time to move on. I’m excited for the Mets and the memories that they will create in Citi Field.

Starting at 5 P.M. SNY will air live from Citi Field all the way up till first pitch starting with Tom Seaver throwing the ceremonial first pitch to Mike Piazza.

Well here is the situation, Mets are 1 1/2 games out of 1st and 1 1/2 ahead in the Wildcard. It’s easy just play solid play and there should be no problem. Well these are the Mets and nothing comes easy to them especially with there bullpen. I am just hoping to take 3 out of 4 from the Cubs and then 2 of 3 from the Marlins. That should get the Mets into the playoffs but we shall see what happens. Buckle up and get your popcorn ready.

Play for the Stadium

Dear Mets,

Since you guys don’t care about winning for the fans or yourselves atleast win for Shea. Win for the former players that have manned your positions. Play for the Hernandez’s and the Gooden’s. Play for the Piazza’s and the Seaver’s. Play for the Agee’s and Kingman’s. Play for the Leiter’s and and Orosco’s. Play for the Johnson’s and Valentine’s. But most importantly STOP playing for the Benitez’s and the Bonilla’s or the Henderson’s and Bell’s. You guys have 7 games left to right the ship and make it into the playoffs but more importantly you have 7 games left in the stadium where so much magic has happened. Lets just hope she didn’t use up all her magic on the ’69, ’86, ’73 or ’00 teams.

Crucial Week

This week the Mets finish off their series with the Astros and then head to Philadelphia for a 2 game set with the Phillies. Then they head to Florida to take on the struggling Marlins. As I write this the Mets are tied in the loss column with the Phillies and 5 up on the Marlins.

Tonight, Mike Pelfrey will take the hill for the Mets and Brian Moehler will start for the Astros. This is a must win game for the Mets, especially if they want to head into Philly tied or a game up on them. Since the end of the Peterson era, Pelfrey has been the Mets most consistent pitcher not name Johan Santana.
